Rolf Hanson
HIC et NUNC II
For the first time in ten years, the Swedish painter Rolf Hanson can be experienced in the gallery again with a new solo exhibition titled HIC et NUNC II. The exhibition presents a series of paintings that Hanson has worked on from 2010 to 2018. HIC et NUNC II refers to the present moment - to what is happening here and now in the encounter with the work.

Hanson's paintings demonstrates an investigating and exact insight into the abstract expression. The paintings are constructed in compositions of colour and form that meets in a common tension-field. Besides being known as one of Scandinavia's greatest painters, Hanson also works with photography and print. For this exhibition, Hanson has created a series of silkscreen prints, which are based on the logic of the exhibited paintings.

”While the scientist murders, the artist attempts to recreate. The latter knows reality cannot be reached by dissection. He therefore uses canvas and brush and paint and tries to create out of his unconscious. When this unconscious sincerely and genuinely identifies itself with the Cosmic Unconscious, the artist’s creations are genuine. He has really created something; his work is not a copy of anything; it exists in its own right. He paints a flower and not an imitation of nature.” (Excerpt from D.T. Suzuki, “Zenbuddhism and psychoanalysis” Harper & Brothers, New York 1960).

Rolf Hanson is represented in collections such as Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Kiasma, Helsinki and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo. In addition, Hanson represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 1988 in the Nordic pavilion and in 1999 and he won the first prize in the recognized Carnegie Art Award.

The exhibition is Rolf Hanson's third solo exhibition at Galleri Susanne Ottesen. Previous solo exhibitions by Rolf Hanson in the gallery counts: OMBRE PORTÈE from 2003 and the exhibition ÉADEM SED ÁLITER from 2008.
